Most appreciated in the Arctic mountain blizzards we endured was the remote start feature, which allowed us to warm the cabin-and all of its heatable surfaces-in advance of entering.The Grand Cherokee is a known quantity, but one flavor of this luxurious midsize SUV is often overlooked: the diesel-powered model. We felt as sure-footed as Wright with his signature walking stick, and no less imperious. ![]() This features a Selec-Terrain system, with settings for topography, such as sand, snow, and rubble. We had heated leather seats and a heated steering wheel, a leather-covered dash, a panoramic sunroof, a potent stereo, an actual electrical outlet, a (somewhat fiddly) touchscreen navigation system, and one of the most confidence-inspiring all-wheel-drive systems on the market. ![]() Not only did it return the aforementioned mileage numbers-quite remarkable for a 5,500-pound truck carting around a pair of gentlemen and all their weekend (and emotional) baggage-it was also outfitted with every necessary comfort and convenience feature. The Jeep handled the trip with remarkable aplomb. Kismet! Of course, we have a heavier foot than the robots at the E.P.A., so we managed to eke out just 610 miles from our tank, in mixed driving, through urban traffic, major elevation changes, and some freaky rain and snowstorms. As it happens, this is exactly the round-trip distance from New York to Fallingwater. on the highway, and with its large gas tank, the Grand Cherokee EcoDiesel is purported to go 680 miles on one fill-up. ![]() This particular, $53,685 Jeep is the only one offered in the United States with the high-efficiency diesel engine. ![]()
